Estella Catherine Grace Schmitt was born May 30, 1909, in Cedar Township, Green County, Churdan, the daughter of Michael and Ellen (Carey) Grace. She graduated from Churdan High School.

On September 29, 1928, she was united in marriage to George Schmitt in Saint Columbkille Church, Churdan. They lived on the home farm north of Marble Rock where she remained until 1996 when she moved to a retirement residence in Cedar Rapids.

Estella was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville where she was involved in the parish and school activities and the Rosary Society. She was also a member of the ACCW, Hi Neighbors, Ulster Homemakers and had been a 4-H Leader. Estella's hobbies included sewing and crocheting.

Living family members include four children, Rev. Phillip Schmitt of Mt. Vernon, Maxine Bouchonville, Palatine, Illinois, Dolores (Stan) Goszczynski of Evanston, Illinois, and Dr. Marvin (Sue) Schmitt DVM of Central City; 13 grandchildren and their families: Denise (Scott) Hemenway, and Brian and Kyle, Jean (Chris) Crews Riley, Alex and Logan, Andy (Sharon) Bouchonville and Joseph, Laura, Vanessa and Jessica, Rich (Lisa) Goszczynski and Jacob and Kylie, Joni (John) Basile, Tom (Laurie) Goszczynski and Ben and Sam, Michael Schmitt, Tom (Susie) Schmitt and Sydney and Daniel, Steven (Becky) Schmitt and Timothy, Kevin Schmitt, Keri Schmitt, Sarah Kersevich and Sylvie, and Sonia Kersevich.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George on March 20, 1987; a son, Richard Schmitt; a granddaughter, Sharon Cosle; a son-in-law, John Bouchonville; two brothers and four sisters.

MARBLE ROCK, IOWA — Estella Schmitt, 96, of Marble Rock, died Wednesday (March 22, 2006) at St. Luke’s Living Center East in Cedar Rapids.

A funeral Mass for Estella Schmitt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Roseville. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Roseville, with a vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by the recitation of the rosary. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

The Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, is in charge of arrangements.
