Harry W. Roberts, Jr., 83 of Charles City died Monday, April 30, 2007, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, Iowa, after a 13 year battle with cancer.

Memorial services for Harry Roberts will be held at a later date. Inurnment will in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Harry William Roberts, Jr. was born in Omaha, Nebraska on December 9, 1923 to Harry W. Roberts and Arline (Helm) Roberts and was raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he graduated from Washington High School. He was attending the South Dakota School of Mines when his education was interrupted by World War II from July 1943 to April 1946. Harry joined the 3118 Signal Service Group assigned to SHAEF and served at Versailles and Rheims, France and Frankfort am Main, Germany until being honorably discharged.

In 1949 Harry graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a Bachelors Degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He was associated with Northrop Aircraft, Hawthorne, Calif; Honeywell Aero, Minneapolis, Minn.; Contour Saw (part of Do All Company), Des Plaines, Illinois, before moving to Charles City as the Oliver Foundry Metallurgist in 1957.

In June of 1957 he was united in marriage to Marjorie Baker Fletcher of Sioux Falls. The family, including Fred and Jacquelin Fletcher, moved to Charles City where they enjoyed many school activities, camping, traveling and friends.

He retired in February 1986 after 29 years in the White Farm Foundry. Frequent domestic and foreign travels provided many memorable experiences. Harry was involved with volunteer service in the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Charles City Art Association, and the Charles City Library Board. In retirement he continued to be interested in travel, golf, trout fishing, books, and music.

Harry is survived by his wife Marjorie, their children Fred (wife, Shelley, and their children Max and Madeline) and Jacquelin (husband Mike Brown and their children Ben and Nate).

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Carol Starr and Jeannette Roberts.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the YMCA, the Charles City Public Library, or Trinity United Methodist Church.
