Irene Matthes, 87, a resident of Topeka, Kansas, and formerly of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died Saturday, August 21, 2004, at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

A funeral Mass for Irene Matthes will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. The Rev. Carl Ries, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday where the Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday at the church an hour prior to the service.

Mary Irene Stoffels Rapp Matthes was born April 3, 1917 at Saint Paul, Minnesota, the daughter of Mathias and Mary Grace (Cook) Stoffels. She graduated from Santa Monica High School, Santa Monica, California.

In 1935 Irene married Albert Rapp. Seven children were born to that union. A later marriage to Harold Matthes resulted in moving from Faribault, Minnesota to Floyd in 1948. Two children were born during the family’s stay in Floyd.

The family moved to Charles City during the 1960’s. Irene resided in Charles City until 2002 when she moved to Topeka. She retired from her position as head cook at the Chautauqua Nursing Home in 1979. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Catherine’s Circle, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Her favorite pastimes included cooking, reading, and spending time with her family.

Living family members include four daughters, Vali (Mark) Reams of Topeka, Kansas, Eileen (John) Caldwell of Salt Lake City, Utah, Marge (Jim) Reed of Greene, and Paula Jacobson of Mason City; two sons, Don (Sharon) Rapp of Yuma, Arizona, and Tony Matthes of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Cummings of California, and Elaine Hendricks of Texas.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 35 years, Harold Matthes; two sons, John and Joe Rapp; a daughter, Dorothy Matthews; two grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; two great-granddaughters; and a great-great-grandson.
