Irus Van De Maat, 93, of Charles City, died Friday, September 29, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Irus Mae Wiltse Van De Maat was born November 9, 1912, at Charles City, the daughter of Orval and Lulu (Carter) Wiltse. She received her education at the Maple Grove School in Chickasaw County.

On October 13, 1934, she was united in marriage to Merle Van De Maat at Charles City. Irus was employed for 13 years at Field Drug. She also worked at Van’s Radio and TV and later at OK Hardware. Irus enjoyed reading, feeding birds, doing needlework and puzzles and taking care of her dogs and cats. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with her family and being a part of their lives.

Living family members include two children, Dixie (Jack) Teepe of Charles City and Donald Van De Maat of Viera, Florida; 11 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant daughter, Janet Van De Maat; and a brother, Leonard Wiltse.
