Virginia Hammel, 75, of Charles City, died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, on the farm.

Virginia Lee Lockie Hammel was born April 27, 1931, at Charles City, the daughter of Paul and Amy (Jorgenson) Lockie. She graduated from the Charles City High School in 1949.

On June 11, 1950, she was united in marriage to Dean L. Hammel at the First Methodist Church in Charles City. They farmed in the Charles City area all of their lives. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities and where she was known as the “plant lady” since she has taken care of the plants at the church for the past 28 years.

Other memberships included the Cattlewomen’s Association, Hoe and Hope Club, Double Dozen Club, Sewing Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. Virginia served for many years as a 4-H leader and judge. Both Virginia and Dean were active in the Floyd County Rural Youth Program. She will be remembered as a very caring, helpful all around friend to all those that knew her. Family was always very important to Virginia and she looked forward to spending time with them especially with her grandchildren. They will remember her as a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother doing all she could to make a home for them.

Living family members include her husband, Dean L. Hammel of Charles City; three children and their families, Jerry (Jane) Hammel of Altoona and their children, Ryan and Kevin, Becky (Kevin) McEnany and their daughter, Jessica of Charles City, and Heidi (Paul) Mehmen and their daughter, Katelyn of Charles City; a brother, Gene (Reva) Lockie of Calico Rock, Ark.; along with many nieces, nephews and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Jean Lockie.
