Charles City, IowaGarland Raymond Girken was born September 29, 1930, in Floyd County, the son of Edward “Ray” and Hazel (Springer) Girken. He graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in 1948. Garland served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
On November 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Lois Rethamel at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Hampton. Garland worked for over 35 years at Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company and then for 10 years in the hardware department at Easters. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and had been a member of the Knights of Columbus. Garland’s hobbies included bowling, fishing and playing various games of which word games were his favorite.
Living family members include his wife, Lois of Charles City, three children, Raymond (Bericona) Girken of Ft. Dodge, Laurie and life partner Shelly of Atlanta, GA, and Lisa (Darren) Zellak of Lisle, IL; five grandchildren, Jessica, Elisha and Raymond Girken, and Abby and Anna Zellak; two brothers, Marvin Girkin of Forest Hill, MD, and Joe (Julie) Girkin of Aurora, CO; and a sister, Darlene Chapman of Hot Springs, AR.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Tom Girken; and a sister, Elaine Irons.
