CHARLES CITY — Max Denham, 87, of Charles City died Wednesday (Nov. 16, 2005) at his residence.

A funeral Mass for Max Denham will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Ries will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City, with a vigil Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., followed by a rosary being led by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue Saturday at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

Max Allen Denham was born November 30, 1917, at Massena, the son of Edgar and Blanche (Erickson) Denham. He graduated from Massena High School and from Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Max proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II having been stationed in Pearl Harbor.

On September 23, 1944, he was united in marriage to Rita Peebles at Red Oak. Max worked for 34 years at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company. During that time Max and Rita were transferred to Minneapolis and Chicago, and upon retirement returned to Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks and the Oliver Management Club.

His interests included playing cards with his friends, woodworking, traveling and camping with his wife Rita, and tending to his garden. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his family.

Living family members include his wife of 61 years, Rita of Charles City; two daughters, Judy (John) Smith of Lake Dallas, TX, and Debra (Mike) Walsdorf of Woodstock, IL; four grandchildren, Jenny (Kurt) Slangerup, Christopher and Claire Walsdorf, and Christie Smith; and two great grandchildren, Tave and Vann Slangerup.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis Denham in 1976; and a sister, Fay Averill.
