Rose Loretta Nilles was born May 20, 1909, in Webster City, Iowa, the 5th child and daughter of Charles and Mary (Smith) Nilles. As a teenager, the family moved to New Hampton and later Charles City. She attended rural school and St Joseph’s at New Hampton for her education. She worked at the knitting mill and did domestic work for several families in the area. She was united in marriage to Mark E. “Buck” Butler on November 18, 1936, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Charles City. The couple then moved to the Chicago area. Upon their return to Charles City, Rose was the caretaker of several family members and was a cook for several establishments including the IC Catholic School and spent many years as a cook for Club 218. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Senior Citizens, and the Heritage Club. Rose enjoyed taking many bus trips and crocheting until her eyesight failed.

Living family members include nieces, Florence (Gary) Beek, Greene, Sharon (Jim) Anthony, Hastings, MN, Patricia Evans, Kent, WA, and Sue (Ken) St. Pierre, Kettle Falls, WA; nephews, Jerry (Marcia) Nilles, Peoria, AZ, James (Carol) Nilles, Mishawaka, IN, Dr. Henry (Ellie) Nixt, Marion Ohio, and Dr. Thomas (Sheryl) Nixt of Honolulu, HI; nephew-in-law Richard Tyndall, Mooresville, NC; niece-in-law Ginger Nixt, Highlands Ranch, CO; and many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1967; sisters Catherine Nilles and Mary Nixt; brothers, Leo, Peter, Carl, and Francis “Bud” Nilles; niece Margaret Tyndall; and nephew Roger Nixt.
