CHARLES CITY— Katharina "Kathy" Friedsam, 94, of Charles City, was received to glory on Saturday (Jan. 22, 2005) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.
Funeral services for Kathy Friedsam will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Gospel Lighthouse in Floyd. Pastor Paul Phillips will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.
Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service.
Katharina Schmahl Friedsam was born Jan. 14, 1911, at Nova Pazova, Yugoslavia, the daughter of Heinrich and Magdalena (Klaus) Schmahl. She received her education in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. After finishing school, she spent two years as a dressmaking apprentice. Subsequently she moved to Austria, close to Linz, where she spent five years in a Lutheran convent as a deaconess. Kathy worked with children, orphans, and cared for the elderly. She later returned to Yugoslavia and worked at a hospital in Belgrad. Kathy received her diploma as a midwife and worked in this capacity for ten years. World War II ended her work. For two years she was in a concentration camp in Yugoslavia. She escaped from the concentration camp with her mother and fled to Austria.
On December 10, 1950, Kathy was united in marriage to Wilhelm Friedsam at Salzburg, Austria. In 1955 through the sponsorship of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Salsbury and the First Baptist Church of Charles City, it was made possible for them to come to Charles City. They lived with Dr. and Mrs. Salsbury for three years before moving to a home of their own. Kathy worked as a housekeeper, seamstress and as a nurse's aide at the Salsbury Baptist Home. She was a member of the Gospel Lighthouse and YMCA Fountain of Youth. Her hobbies included sewing, knitting and crocheting.
Close relatives treasuring her memory are her brother, John Schmahl of Kamiah, Idaho; a niece, Brigitte (Roland) Philipp of Osage; a nephew, Harty (Marjorie) Schmahl of Kamiah, Idaho; and several great- and great- great nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on November 28, 2003; a sister; a brother; and one great nephew.
Memorials may be directed to the Lighthouse Academy, Floyd.
