Eugene H. Monroe, a former resident of Nashua, Chickasaw county, Iowa and Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died November 6, 2008, in Olympia, Washington.

He was born in September 1924 in Bassett, Iowa, the second son of Herbert and Viola (nee Rausch) Monroe, and was raised in the Nashua and Charles City areas. He enlisted in the US Army in 1943.

Eugene returned to Charles City High School to graduate with the class of 1947. Upon his retirement from the Army in 1965, he moved to Tumwater, Washington where, among other work, he was an aerospace machinist with Boeing. He received an Associate Degree from Centralia Community College in 1974.

He married Virginia Fohl, in Cedar Grove, Indiana on Oct. 27, 1951. They had five sons, Herb, Mike, Dave, Ray (Karen) and Guy (Pam); one daughter, Rose; and five grandchildren, Amber, Tasha, Ocean, Harlie and Merlin - all whom reside in Washington. He is also survived by a step-brother, Roger Bradshaw of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Oral Bradshaw; two brothers, Virgil and Merlin; one step-brother, Dale Bradshaw; and three step-sisters, Marjorie Jones, Betty Krogh and Marlys Miller.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Mills & Mills Funeral Home, Tumwater, Washington.
