Pauline J. Vala, 93, of Charles City, died Thursday, November 09, 2006, at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Pauline Jonie Vala was born August 7, 1913, the daughter of Edwald and Marie (Marzen) Nikolas in Grand Meadow, Minn. She graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1932 and was the valedictorian of her class.

On November 28, 1935 she was united in marriage to Charles Vala at Roseville. Pauline was a farm wife and was employed at Dean Jewelers for a period of time. Charles and Pauline farmed near Oakwood for many years until retirement and moving to Charles City.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Circle, and the Women’s Club. Her interest included playing cards, flowers, gardening, cooking, canning, and spending time with her family. Pauline will always be remembered as a hard worker and a true farm wife.

Living family members include two grandchildren, Kurt Vala of Northfield, N.H., and Sheila (Lundy) Anderson of Fairfield; two great grandchildren, Spencer Vala and Ellie Anderson; two sisters, Betty (Russell) Ewoldt of Plymouth, Minn., Francys Klages of Charles City; two brothers, Eugene Nikolas of Osage and Earl (Jeanette) Nikolas of Greene; and a daughter-in-law, Pam Vala of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Reverend Ralph Vala and Gary Vala; four brothers, Edward Nikolas, Clair Nikolas, Leo Nikolas, and Donald Nikolas.
