Charles City, IowaClyde Bonzer, 86, of Charles City, Iowa, died, Wednesday, August 29, 2007, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Clyde Gerald Bonzer was born October 29, 1920, near Nashua, the son of George and Pearl (Shoop) Bonzer. He graduated from Nashua High School.
On September 8, 1940, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Rodamaker at the Little Brown Church. He worked for a time at the Oliver plant in Charles City. At the outbreak of WWII Clyde enlisted in the Army and spent several years in Europe where he saw a great deal of combat and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor.
After returning home from the war, Clyde sold Morman Feed for a year. Following that he and Ed Littauer established the B&L Shell service station on North Main in Charles City. A year later he began farming near Nashua and Charles City. Clyde then worked for his cousin, Bart Bonzer at Bonzer and Bryan, in sales. In 1966 he began working at the Charles City Post Office retiring in 1982. Betty died in 1983.
Clyde then married LaVonne Heit Guthart in 1984 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, V.F.W., Moose Lodge and Elks. For many years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. He and Lavonne especially enjoyed time spent at the Mississippi River and winters in Arizona.
Living family members include his wife, LaVonne of Charles City; a daughter, Sherry (Tracy) Sweet of Charles City; a granddaughter, Sally Sweet and her husband Keith Patterson; a grandson, Andy (Deena) Sweet; a stepdaughter, Linda (Charlie) Beckett of Dyersville; a stepson, Tom (Patti) Guthart of Albuquerque, N.M.; four step-grandchildren, Michael Beckett, David (Jarin) Beckett, and Christopher and Cara Guthart; and a step-great granddaughter Avery Beckett; and several nieces and nephews.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Roberta Bonzer and Gladys Roll; and two brothers, Paul and Ralph Bonzer.
