Kenneth Hovey, 77, of Charles City, died on Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at his home.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 3, 2006 at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 South Main, Charles City, Iowa 50616.

Kenneth LaVern Hovey was born June 7, 1929, at Independence, the son of George and Velma (McDonald) Hovey. He was the second of six children. The family moved to Charles City where he attended school. In his early years he worked for the Carey Coal Company and the Oliver Corporation for a short time. Kenneth proudly served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

On February 18, 1956, he was united in marriage to Kathryn Strassburg at Austin, Minnesota. Four children: Tim, Lori, Pam and Dan Hovey, were born to this union. Kenneth was employed by Clark Produce, Wachsman Contractors and Takin Freight Line, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 3914 and military order of the Cooties of Charles City. Kenneth thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor sporting events of hunting and fishing. His deer hunting trips produced several trophy deer from many states. He also loved to pick the wild berries and other fruits in the fall of the year and produced many tasty jellies. Kenneth took great pleasure and pride in providing for his family. He will be best remembered by his family as being strong, courageous, honest and hard working.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Kenneth’s life are his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Kathryn Hovey of Charles City; two sons, Tim (Deb) Hovey, and Dan Hovey both of Charles City; three daughters, Linda (Ron) Apel, Lori Westendorf and special friend Dave Lorenz and Pam Cook all of Charles City; nine grandchildren, Jamie Cook and special friend Melinda Hoy, Marty Westendorf, Lisa and special friend Kurt Meek, Steve and special friend Aranda Cowell and Chad (Shannon) Apel, and Ryan (Holly) Wright; five great grandchildren, Jared Cook, Jordan, Caedyn and Logan Apel, and Brett Cagley; a sister Ruth (Dale) Chestek of Charles City; and two brothers George (LuJayne) Hovey of Dickinson, Tex. and Raymond Hovey of Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Betty Hovey and Rose Wiggins both of Charles City; a brother-in-law, Daryl (Mary) Strassburg of Waterloo; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Hovey; a brother, Glenn Hovey; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, the late Carl and Rose Strassburg.
