GREENE, IOWA - Funeral services for Dorothy L. Fischer, age 89, of 207 W. Ely St., Greene, will be held on Thursday morning, October 23, 2008, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 22, at the Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Dorothy Lena Bertha Gabe was born on September 17, 1919, in rural Pleasant Grove Township, Floyd County, a daughter of William and Minnie (Oldenburg) Gabe, and died on Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell, Iowa.
She was baptized on October 19, 1919, at St. Peter Lutheran in Greene, and was confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. Dorothy received her education in the rural Pleasant Grove School and graduated from the Charles City High School in 1936. She attended Mason City Business College and LaJames School of Cosmetology, both in Mason City.
On April 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to Wayne Clifford Fischer at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. They made their home in Greene where she lived until shortly before her death.
Dorothy's first beauty shop in Greene was located in the Frudden Building shared with Dr. Andersen. In 1950 she moved her beauty shop to her home. She served her profession and community with dedication for more than 60 years. Dorothy never officially retired, as she still had several loyal customers she cared for until she had to leave her home due to health reasons. Dorothy was recognized by the National Cosmetology Association of Iowa in 2002.
She was devoted to her church as a treasurer of the Sunday school and teacher of Sunday school and confirmation classes. She also sang in the church choir. If there was any civic activity going on in the community, Dorothy was sure to be involved with it. She served on the Greene City Council, Betterment Council, Historical Society, Commercial Club and American Legion Auxiliary. She was recognized with the Iowa Governors Leadership Award, and the Greene Spirit Award.
Dorothy was an avid bowler, sponsoring a team for many years. She was a member of the United States Bowling Congress, and participated in the Iowa Games Senior Olympics in bowling. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 1190 in Charles City.
Living family members include her daughter, Janea (John) Hillier of Grinnell; her son, Dr. Jerry Fischer of Omaha, five grandchildren: Jacie Hillier, John (Cassie) Hillier, Joel (Esther) Fischer, Sarah (Eric) Roane and Christopher Fischer; and two great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Amy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne C. Fischer, on May 3, 1977; her parents, five brothers, Roy, Leo, Walter and two in infancy; and one sister, Ella Drushel.
