Charles City, IowaPaul “Smitty” Smith, 81, of Charles City, died Saturday, October 18, 2008, at the Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City.
Pastor Dennis Niezwaag, of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City.
Paul Arthur Smith was born November 23, 1926, at LaPorte City, Indiana, the son of Arthur and Nora (Pflugshet) Smith. He graduated from the St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, Michigan. and attended linotype school in Charles City. Paul proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.
On July 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Genevieve Crandall at Charles City. Paul worked at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment Company for over 45 years.
He was a member of the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, American Legion, Amvets and was a past member of the Elks. His interests included golfing, hunting and watching Hawkeye sports. For many years Paul refereed high school football and basketball games.
Living family members include two daughters, Cynthia (Rick) Frascht of Charles City, and Sandra Lambert of Charles City; four grandchildren, Rod (Amy) Frascht, Melissa (Dan) Ashley, Joshua Smith and special friend Amy Ransom, and Samantha Lambert; four great grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Albers of Baroda, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a great granddaughter, Rachel Frascht; a brother, Ronald Smith; and a sister, Arlene Yerrington.
