BLOOMINGTON, MINNESOTA — Henry I. Montgomery, age 83, of Bloomington, Minnesota, and formerly of Charles City, Floyd county, Iowa, died on September 28, 2008.

Funeral services were held on October 2, 2008 in Edina, Minnesota, with interment at Phelps Cemetery in his native Decorah, Iowa.

Henry received the Bronze Star for valor while in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and from 1945-47 was a field agent for the OSS/CIA in central Europe. He went on to later play an instrumental role in launching the profession of financial planning in the 1970s and founded Planners Financial Services, Inc. of Minneapolis, of which he was president from 1972-2005.

Montgomery, Henry I., age 83, of Bloomington, [Minnesota] passed away September 28, 2008. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Diane Gjetley, children, Priscilla and Andrew.

A Certified Financial Planner, he was the founder and president of Planners Financial Services, Inc. of Minneapolis from 1972 to 2005. A native of Decorah, Iowa, he graduated from Decorah High School in 1942. In service with U.S. Army in Europe (1943- 45), he received a Bronze Star Medal for valor. From 1945 to 1947 he was a field agent for the OSS/CIA in central Europe. He graduated in 1952 from Tulane University in New Orleans with a BBA and was an entrepreneur and business owner all of his working life.

He owned and operated a soft drink bottling company until 1964, provided marketing consultation services in Europe and the United States from 1965 to 1972. He was instrumental in launching the profession of financial planning in the 1970s and 1980s.

He held local and national leadership positions in both the International Association of Financial Planners and the Institute of Certified Financial Planning (ICFP). He originated the first ICFP Educational Retreat, held at St. John's University, Collegeville, MN, a professional development conference continued to this day. He served as an NASD District 8 Committee member and Vice Chairperson and on the Investment Company Institute Investment Adviser Committee.

A national leader in the professional and ethical development of financial planning, Montgomery was the recipient of the P. Kemp Fain Professional Service award by the Financial Planning Association (1998), The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Financial Planning Association of Minnesota (2008) and had the annual Montgomery Scholarship Fund named in his and his son Andrew's honor in 2008 by the Financial Planning Association of Minnesota. He was a member of both the American Legion and the BPO Elks for over 50 years.

Survived by wife of sixty years, Barbara, son Michael (Peggy McClanahan), daughters Ruth (Jacob Caspi) and Kelly (Robert Ferrer), grandchildren David and Daniel Montgomery and Alessandra, Paul and Thomas Ferrer, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave. South, Edina. Interment services will be on Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.
