Elmer was born on Feb. 24, 1923 in Floyd, the middle child of Fredrick and Luella Schlaach. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in Floyd. During his early years he liked to putter with equipment around the farm and be in the outdoors hunting, fishing and gardening that grew into a lifetime hobby. He joined the Marine Corps on June 16, 1945 and was honorably discharged in October of 1946. During his enlistment he traveled to Hawaii, the Philippines, Guam and then China, working in the security forces. When he returned from WW II he met his future wife at family get together in Ripon Wisc.

On Oct. 26, 1958, he and Mabel H. Wichman were united in marriage at the parsonage in Ripon, Wisconsin. They moved to Charles City where Elmer lived and began their life as husband and wife, soon welcoming two sons to the family. Elmer studied at the Coyne School in Chicago for the trade of Electrician. Elmer was then engaged as an electrician for 43 years working for Wubben's and their predecessors for 17 years. Elmer was known for his great sense of humor and his friendly manors. He was always considerate of others and helped many with free work because they were deserving people that he knew.

He was a member of the American Legion, and a very active member of St. John’s where he served as an usher for over 40 years, along with serving on the church and stewardship boards. He also served the city of Charles City on the Electrical Board.

Those thankful in sharing Elmer’s life include his wife Mabel, of just shy of 51 years, their two sons James William and Randall Dean both of Charles City, one brother Eugene and his wife Shirley Kreger, Waterloo; four sister in laws Rose Wichman, Andrea and her husband Ben Werzinske, Eilene and her husband Don Enders, Marion Kreger, two brother in laws Bill and his wife Judie, Wichman, and Les and his wife Carol Wichman, and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, one brother Clayton Kreger and one brother-in-law DuWayne Wichman preceded him in death.
