Dorothy J. Houdek, age 80, of Charles City died Thursday morning, August 21, 2008 at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral home in Nashua with pastor Thomas Hagen officiating.

Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua with John Houdek, Thomas Houdek, John Paul, T.J. Houdek, Dan Houdek and Gene Houdek serving as pallbearers.

Dorothy J. Houdek was born December 18, 1927, on a farm near Postville, Iowa, the daughter of Eli and Elna (Dieke) Eberling. At the age of 4, she moved to Nashua with her family. Dorothy graduated from Nashua High School in 1946.

She married Virgil Houdek in 1951. To this union five children were born. They later divorced. Dorothy raised her family in Charles City where she worked as a waitress for a number of local restaurants. She loved gardening, flowers, cooking and rug hooking. Dorothy volunteered many hours to the Food Box in Charles City.

After moving to the nursing home in 2001, she enjoyed the crafts and bingo games. Dorothy will be remembered for her sense of humor and the love she had for her grandchildren and the many games of “Kings Corners” she played with them.

Dorothy is survived by three sons, John (Teri) Houdek of Paris, Texas, Thomas (Diane) Houdek of Charles City and James Houdek of Minnesota; two daughters, Sandra Paul of Charles City and Sharon Luckenbaugh of Texarkana, Texas; a brother, Gerald Eberling of Nashua; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Eberling in 2002.
