BOZEMAN, MONTANA — John G. Salsbury, age 92, formerly of Charles City, died on July 21, 2008, in Bozeman, Montana, where he and his wife have most recently been residing.

John was born in Western, Nebraska, on June 12, 1916. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Iowa State University in 1938, and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at ISU in 1940. His father began Salsbury Laboratories in 1926, and after graduating John joined the company, working in many departments over the years. In 1945 he became vice president and general manager of the firm, was named president in 1960, and in 1971 became chairman of the company when his eldest son, Doug, became president. He retired in November 1982.

During his working years, John was also very involved in organizations beyond the lab. He was president of the American Poultry Historical Society and the Animal Health Institute, chairman of the American Egg Board, and director of the Iowa State University Foundation, the National Association of Manufacturers, the National Broiler Council, and the Southeastern Poultry and Egg Association. He was a member of the World's Poultry Science Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Society of Parasitologists, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, and the Poultry Science Association. He was also the president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club in Charles City, Iowa, and was active in Boy Scouts of America, for which he received the Silver Beaver Award.

After his retirement, he had time to pursue a favorite hobby and became a fine craftsman and miniaturist, building many dollhouses which his wife, Doris, decorated.

John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris J. Brunner-Salsbury of Bozeman; and their five children: Douglas E. Salsbury of Whitehall, Montana; Craig B. Salsbury of Fairbanks, Alaska; Debra Feintech of Portland, Maine; Barbara J. Leduc of Omaha, Nebraska; and Rebecca A. Miller of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Dr. Salsbury is a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Dillon, Mont.

A private memorial service has taken place at the St. James Episcopal Church Chapel in Bozeman. Funeral arrangements were handled by Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service. www.dokkkennelson.com , (406) 587-3184.
