Mr. and Mrs. Heye Hemmen, formerly of Grundy Center, Iowa, were fatally injured in a car collision 10 miles south of Osage, Mitchell county, Iowa, last Tuesday [ February 27, 1962]. Both of them died within 24 hours. They were taken to the hospital at Charles City, Iowa. Mrs. Hemmen died shortly after reaching the hospital. He was later taken to the hospital at Rochester where he died the following day.

Mr. and Mrs. Hemmen were driving south from their home at Austin, Minnesota. They were on their way to Des Moines where he was to take part in American Bowling Congress. They expected to stop at Grundy Center where one or more of their relatives were to join them on the trip to Des Moines.

High snowbanks alongside of the highway cut off visibility and drivers of the cars could not see each other in time to avoid the collision at the road intersection. The Hemmen car was struck on its side and it was badly demolished. The car which crashed into the Hemmen car was driven by a woman from Mason City. She is reported to have been going 60 miles an hour. The Mason City woman escaped with only slight injuries.

Mr. and Mrs. Hemmen resided in Grundy county for several years. He was a son of Hemme Hemmen, who for several years was janitor at the Grundy county courthouse, and who is now living with his daughter, Mrs. Dena Van Lengen, at Stout. Heye Hemmen was 52 years old. His wife was the former Nellie Baldwin. She grew up in the vicinity of Grundy Center. She was 61 years old.

Mr. and Mrs. Hemmen during the early part of their married life resided in Grundy county. For a time they were employed on the Jim Connell farm near Grundy Center. 21 years ago they moved to Austin, Minnesota, where Heye was given a job on the Austin police force. He continued in this position up to the time of his death. He was nearing the age of retirement and had expected to leave the police force this fall.

Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Hemmen were held Saturday morning [March 3, 1962] at St. Augustus Catholic Church in Austin, Minn. Burial was in Austin. There is one surviving daughter and granddaughter who reside in Austin. Other surviving relatives are the father Hemme Hemmen from Stout. Others of Heye's surviving relatives are a sister, Mrs. Dena Van Lengen from Stout, a sister Mrs. John Hook, Parkersburg, and a sister, Mrs. Pete Brower, Grundy Center and one brother Cobie from Britt, Iowa.

Surviving members of Mrs. Hemmen's family are, a sister, Mrs. Fred Clark, St. Paul, a sister Mrs. Albert Hanisch, Waterloo, a brother Ed Baldwin, Waterloo.

Relatives from a distance who attended funeral services last Saturday were Hemme Hemmen and daughter, Mrs. Dena Van Lengen and son, Cobie Hemmen, Britt, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Clark, St. Paul, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hanisch, Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baldwin, Waterloo, Mrs. Geo. Herbeck and son, Pekin, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hulne, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hulne, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Ralston and Nora Kinsinger, all from Grundy Center.
