Dean Darrell Crum was born on Nov. 26, 1928, in Nora Springs, the son of Dale and Hannah (Manniga) Crum. He received his education in the Nora Springs School system, graduating from Nora Springs High School in 1946.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going on fishing trips to Minnesota and going to rummage sales, and was an avid high school sports fan, but his great love was his family, especially his grandchildren, and going to all of their sports activities.
