Elmer L. Hewitt Jr., 51, of 919 N. Jefferson Ave., died Wednesday morning (Jan. 23, 2002) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Further visitation will continue one hour before services at the church.

Elmer was born on Sept. 22, 1950, to Elmer LeRoy Sr. and Betty Jane (Lewis) Hewitt at Nora Springs. He attended high school and then took business classes at North Iowa Area Community College.

He owned and operated Hewitt Hauling for many years until he was disabled.

Elmer was united in marriage to Rita Colleen Mitchell on June 24, 1968, at Sioux Falls, S. D. To this union was born two sons. He gave of his time as a Scoutmaster for Troop 401 and then later as a Cub Scout Leader for Pack 153.

He thoroughly enjoyed being a Civil War re-enactor and spending his time educating and entertaining people at nursing homes and schools with his knowledge of the Civil War. He served as a captain of the 8th Texas Dismounted Calvary. During the off-season he enjoyed using the Internet and entertaining his grandchildren.

Elmer was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Hampton VFW and was a former member of the American Legion. His family and many friends will miss Elmer's sense of humor.

Those thankful in sharing Elmer's life include his wife of 33 years, Rita Hewitt, of Mason City; his two sons, Jerry and his wife, DeAnna Hewitt, and their four children, Allison, Brandon, Lois and Jeremiah, and Tom and his wife, Christy Hewitt, and their child, Jesse, all of Mason City; three sisters, Joyce and her husband, Harley Shaw, of Orchard, Connie and her husband, Gary Graham, of Rockford, and Lola and her husband, John Mills, of Rosemont, Minn.; and two brothers, Gene Lewis, of Marion, and William Burgess, of Northwood; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents; one brother, Jerry Hewitt; and one nephew, Scott Hewitt.
