There are several possibilities.
They may have simply rented the land, it which case it may be nearly impossible to find a record. The more encouraging possibility is that they bought the land outright in which case a deed may have been filed with the county or they had a mortgage in which case the mortgage document may be filed with the county. It is possible that it was a homestead but I doubt it was a federal purchase. Its just too late. They could have lost it on a tax lien in which case there may be a legal notice in the West Union paper and a court record.

The good news is that these records have been filmed. The bad news is that there are quite a few films that may lead to the desired location. A family history center located near you would possibly be the least expensive path to getting the record you need. I would start with mortgages and indexes to records.

You could also check with the Fayette Genealogical Society to see if they can get access to the deed and or mortgage record books for a modest fee.
