Your answer may lie in or near Pawlet, Rutland Vermont where the 1880 census shows Elisabeth Beattie(born VT, abt 1835) and son Harry(born IA, abt 1870) living with sister Esther Lambert.
Goodwins are found in Clayton IA with VT roots. Both Goodwins and Beatties and variants are found in Washington NY where according to one researcher Beattie-Goodwin Marriage happened. Kevin Oliver, 38 Winchester ST Brookline, MA(Zip unknown) has posted some info on Rootsweb and the Pedigree Resource file at Family search.org.
