The Oelwein Area Genealogy Society has Cemetery books covering the Oelwein cemeteries for the most part. If the family could not afford a marker this may not include a child.

The Family History Library has a microfilmed death record by county for all Iowa Counties up to about 1920. These may be obtained if you have a Family History Center attached to a LDS church nearby. The film rental would be about $6.

The Fayette County Genealogy Society may be willing to do a lookup for a small donation.

There is a possibility that Michael was a rail worker as his occupation on the 1900 census is listed as boiler maker. Some workers from Oelwein participated in building the lines which would become the Northern Pacific all the way to Washington State and so there is a possibility the family moved at least temporarily.
