My mother, Anne Schmit Barry, worked on the family history in the 1970s. According to the book, Philip Joseph (J.P.) Schmit's sister was Elizabeth Schmit who married Peter Kauten Jr. Their father was Chrisostom Joseph Schmit a/k/a John Anselm Schmit.and mother was Margreta Thil.
Philip Joseph Schmit (b.80-27-1839 in Tentange, Belgium; died 1-18-1911 in Fayette Co., Iowa;) married Mary Katherine Kauten on 11-21-1866 in Dubuque, IA. Mary's birthdate is 2-13-1842 born in Rommel, Belgium and died 2-10-11 in Fayette Co., Fairbank, IA. My grandfather is Philip Peter F. Schmit who married Anna Marie Lorber.
If you would like more information, please let me know. I also know of some other Kautens in the area who may have more information. Currently I am working full time, so it may take a while to get back to you.
