Joseph Ewing answered the last roll
call Thursday morning and passed
over to the grand review. He was an
employee in the shops and had seemingly
been in his accustomed health.
He returned from his work Wednesday
night, and retired at the usual time to
fall into the last sleep. The funeral
was held from the residence Saturday
afternoon at 2 p. m. He was a native
of Scotland, and was born in Duneath,
December 9, 1842. He came to this
country with his parents in 1850, and
in 1861 he enlisted in Company E,
Ninth Iowa, as a drummer boy, and
served through the war. April 26,
1870 he was united in marriage to
Miss Lilly Speed, and twelve children
were born to this union, ten or whom
are now living. The last services were
conducted by Rev. E. L. True, and a
number of old soldiers were in attendance.
