- Edwin Daniel Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Smith,
was born in Lorain county, Ohio, March 24, 1948 and
died at his home 419 East Charles Street, Oelwein, Iowa
on March 1, 1927 at the age of 79 years, less 23 days.
He spent his childhood and youth in the place of his birth
and there received such schooling as the community had
to offer.
- When a lad of only 15 years he enlisted in the Union Army
and spent 3 years in the service of his country. He
received his discharge from the Army March 1, 1867 with
the character designation, "Very Good and in numerous
engagements with the enemy has proved himself a brave and
gallant soldier." His discharge cites specifically the following
engagements in which he took part, "Participated in Buzzard
mountain, Peach Tree Creek, in General Sherman's Atlanta, Ga.
---- the actions of New Hope church near Marietta July 4, 1864.
Atlanta and Jonesboro-Campaign" He served in Company A 25th
Ohio Infantry. His discharge also indicated that at the time of
his discharge he was 18 years of age after service of
three years.
- In 1867, very soon after his discharge from the Army, he came
to Iowa, Clayton county. Almost upon his arrival at a social affair
the community he met Miss Chloe Bailey and October 20, 1887
they were united in marriage. They set up their home on a farm
in Clayton county and later settled in Fayette county where he
spent the rest of his life. Twenty-eight years ago he left the farm in
Putnam township and moved to Oelwein. To his union with Chloe
Bailey two sons were born, Webb D. Smith and William K. Smith now
of Crossville, Tenn. His wife died January 5, 1920 and his son Webb
died March 27, 1925. He is survived by the one son, six grand
children Luella, Charles and Cecil children of Webb and Jim and
Claire, children of William K., also two great grandchildren, Edwin
and Darlene, two sisters Mrs. L. M. Wayett of Cleveland, Ohio and
Mrs. C. B. McCarty of Pasadena, Cal., two half sisters, Mrs. Minnie
Stone and Mrs. Julia Sherwood of Waterloo, Ia., also three half
brothers, Henry Smith of Edgewood, Ashley Smith and Daniel Smith.
- After he moved to town he worked for Connor Brothers for eleven
years and looked after his property interests in the community.
- In the passing of Ed Smith the community loses one of its most
respected citizens. He was one of the few remaining comrades who
wore the blue uniform in the sixties and the citizens of our country
have always offered a measure of honor and respect to the men of
the Grand Army of the Republic that none other is entitled to.
- Burial services were conducted at the home 419 East Charles Street
and at Grace Methodist church Thursday afternoon, March 3 by Rev.
A. W. Henke, minister of the church. Interment was made in Woodlawn
Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa.
