As we went to press last week we
noted the serious illness of George T.
Descent, father of Mrs. S. Cloyer, who
was lying very low from the effects of
a stroke of paralysis. He lingered on
the shores of time until about two
o'clock Sunday morning, when the
death angel came and carried his spirit
to the unseen world. Deceased was
born in Niagara District, Canada, January
19, 1824, and was therefore at
the time of his death a little past 73
years of age. He was reared to manhood
in his native land. He was
married on the 7th of June, 1847, to
Miss Chloe Chapman and after making
their home for thirteen years in
Canada, in 1860 they came to Iowa
and settled in Fayette county. He
purchased a farm in Bethel township,
and engaged in farming until 1872,
when he moved to West Union and engaged
in the hotel business. His first
place was a wooden structure, which
he occupied until 1875, when he built
a three story brick and named it the
Descent House. For the past four
years he has resided with his daughter,
Mrs. Cloyer, in this city. A
brief funeral service was held at the
family residence Tuesday morning, after,
which the remains were taken to
West Union for burial. Those who
knew him best will remember him as
a genial, kindly man, and a man who
enjoyed the respect of his fellow men.Oelwein Register - 2 Mar 1897
