Alice Copp

Alice L. Copp, 99, died Thursday, September 1, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in West Union, Iowa, after a short illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hawkeye, Iowa. Rev. William Horn officiated. Burial was in Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home of Hawkeye was in charge of arrangements.

Alice Louise was born November 17, 1905, in Bethel Township, Fayette County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Dreier) Pleggenkuhle. She was baptized December 17, 1905, by Pastor J. O. Staehling and confirmed March 28, 1920, by Rev. A. H. Landgrebe at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Richfield. Alice attended country school in Fayette County. She left school because she was needed at home and she also helped mothers with newborn children as a nanny and housekeeper. She then worked at Timm’s Restaurant and Kocher’s Grocery Store in Hawkeye, Iowa.

Alice was united in marriage with Velmer Copp February 28, 1938, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Richfield. Velmer preceded her in death July 11, 1983.

Alice was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye. She was a member of the Trinity WELCA, sewing ladies, and she had taught Sunday School. She enjoyed collecting cookie cutters and baking cutout sugar cookies, tending her flower garden, making quilts for church, reading her Bible, fishing, trips to the Mississippi River, and her daughter Mary’s dog, Ginger.

Alice is survived by two daughters, Mary (Don) Treloar of Hawkeye, and Jane Dietrich of Waukon; four grandchildren, Steve (Lea Ann) Treloar of Hawkeye, Mark (Angie) Treloar of Hawkeye, Darcy Dietrich of Bloomington, Minn., and Daren (Jenny Harberts) Dietrich of Decorah; six great-grandchildren, Lindsay, Erik, Brittney, Emma, Emily, and Nathan; and one great-great-grandchild, Rae.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Velmer; one son, Alan Copp; one grandson, Dean Treloar; a son-in-law, Duane Dietrich; her parents; and three brothers, George, Walter, and Louie Pleggenkuhle.

Casketbearers were Ronnie Kent, Harvey Ungerer, Dean Fritz, Daryl Copp, Alan Kleppe, and Dennis Copp.
