The citizens of Oelwein were shocked Monday afternoon to learn of the death of George Wilkinson which occurred at 1:30 p. m. The limb which has troubled him for the past two years was amputated Sunday, and he survived the operation but twenty-four hours.
George Wilkinson was born in LeRoy township, Wis., September 7, 1863, and was therefore thirty-eight years, eight month and nineteen day of age at the time of his death. In December 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss May Badger. As a result of this union two daughters, Lela and Fern, are left with the wife and mother to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father.
In 1886 Mr. Wilkinson came to Oelwein and opened a meat market in company with Frank Cragin. In 1889 he was in Montana for some time. In 1890 he again embarked in the meat market business and continued several years till he sold out, and went on the road as a traveling salesman. He was very successful, and continued till the spring of 1900 when one of his legs was severely injured. After a short time he again went on the road, but was unable to remain in consequence of the condition of the injured limb. During the past two years he has been in the Presbyterian hospital in Chicago for several months, and recently decided on amputation. He did not recover from the shock, and died suddenly Monday afternoon.
Mr. Wilkinson was an honorable, upright man, and had many friends. He was a member of several orders, among them being the I.O.O.F., K of P. and M.W.A. The funeral services occur this afternoon at 2 o'clock at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, conducted by Rev. C. G. Adams. There is sincere sorrow among his many friends in the city at his death, and sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.
