Ira L. Cole, well known in this city, died at his home in Strawberry Point, Wednesday, May 7, and the funeral occurred Friday from the residence conducted by the Reverends Hestwood and Marsh.
He was born in New York June 19, 1830, first came to Iowa in 1852, and invested in land. He did not permanently locate here however till 1860 when he settled at Strawberry Point which has since been his home. During the civil war he was a member of Company D, 21st. Iowa Volunteers, and served over two years.
Following the war he was a contractor for several years and in 1880 went into the lumber business with the King Brothers, the firm having yards at Strawberry Point and Oelwein. He was successful in business, and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. He was a member of the Congregational church. In 1852 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Fay, and to this union were born four children. Only one of whom, Dr. J. F. Cole, of this city survives him. His wife also remains to mourn the loss of a kind husband. The funeral was under the auspices of the G. R. A., and was largely attended.Oelwein Register - May 14, 1902
