Murder in Fayette –Whiskey did it.
West Union Gazette:--Sam and John Steiner were bachelor brothers living together in a cabin near Brainard. Wednesday evening they had as a guest one of the neighbors, Andrew Hunsbarger. During the evening the jug passed freely, and in due time a quarrel was brewed, becoming more intense as time and wine waned, until it reached a veritable scrap, in the midst of which Sam Steiner got out his shotgun and blazed away at the other two struggling on the floor, the full charge striking, his brother John in the right eye, killing him instantly. The shooting so frightened Hunsbarger that he did not wait to see the effects of it but ran home bareheaded. Returning the next morning he found the body of John on the floor, Sam sitting beside it. He then went to Elgin and gave the story of the affray. A warrant was sworn out by County Attorney Hancock for the arrest of Steiner and Hunsbarger, and the sheriff started at once to serve it; but by the time he had reached the Steiner place Sam was knocking for admission to the county jail, saying he had killed his brother and wanted to get in. Mrs. Hockings was there to accommodate him. He had walked up the track to give himself up. Hunsbarger was arrested, but was retained by the Coroner for the inquest held yesterday afternoon.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows a Jno Steiner buried in Elgin City Cemetery. He was born in 1845 and died Jan. 11, 1899.
