A West Union Man Killed.
On Sunday, Nov. 4, a very distressing hunting accident happened near Arlington which resulted on Monday in the death of John Moreland at his home in West Union. It seems Howard Weed, the West Union real estate man, had a business matter to attend to Sunday north of Arlington. John Moreland went with him. Some time Sunday afternoon they started out hunting quail, taking with them a small boy from the neighborhood. They started a flock that flew into a ravine. Howard Weed went along the edge of the ravine and John sent his dog down after the quail and with the boy started to follow the dog, the boy was behind John and his gun was accidently discharged, the load striking John in the calf of the leg, mutilating the flush and breaking both bones. Howard rendered what assistance he could, putting a bandage on the leg to stop circulation and then went to Arlington where the leg was dressed. Monday morning Moreland was taken home to West Union on the train and died early in the afternoon from loss of blood and the shock to his system.
John Moreland was about twenty-five years of age and had lived in West Union from childhood.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he is buried in the West Union Cemetery and was born January 4, 1876 and died Nov. 5.
