Phyllis Marion Gehring,age 94, of Elgin, Iowa, died Sunday, October 4, 1998 at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City, Iowa following a long illness. She was born January 6, 1904 on a farm in Windsor Township near West Union, Iowa. She was the daughter of Fred and Mary (Madsen) Olesen. Her early education was received in the country school, later graduating from West Union High School in 1921. The next several years were spent on farms near West Union, Elgin and later moving to Wadena.

On December 27, 1944 she was united in marriage to Lester E. Gehring. Their home was established on the Gehring farm near Wadena, where they lived until moving to Elgin in 1953. To this union a son, Robert Edward Gehring, was born. Phyllis Marion was employed for many years as a secretary for Mulford and Hellum Produce and later
she worked at Moore Company Grocery Store until she retired in 1986. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star where she was the Elgin Chapter Secretary for many years.

Survivors include: her son Robert Gehring of Marengo, Iowa; four daughters and a son by a former marriage: Virginia Lammert of Orange City, Iowa, Marjorie Kohler of Sarasota, Florida, Pat Schultz of Mason City, Iowa, Shirley (Gary) Deverell of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ray Herwig, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 20 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, one cousin, one niece, and one nephew.

She was preceded inn death by her husband Lester; a sister Eva Dewey; a brother Edward Olesen; three sons-in-law, Clinton "Jake" Lammert, Keith Kohler, and Grant Schultz; a daughter-in-law Brenda Gehring and a granddaughter, Brandi Gehring.

Services were held at the St.Paul's United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa officiated by Rev. Arley Ellingson and organist was Sara Strong. Interment was at the Illyria Cemetery in rural Elgin, Iowa. Casket bearers were Rob Gehring, Sean Gehring, Henry Herwig, Billy Herwig, Dennis Schlein, and Brad Schultz.
