John H. Epps was born in Iroquois county, Ill., October 13, 1852. When quite young, he came with his parents to this locality settling with them on the farm now owned by A. D. Doland, just north of the Pleasant Hill cemetery. Here he grew to manhood an in May 1879 was united in marriage with Miss Dora Epperson. After nearly ten years of married life a cloud came over her mind and it was found necessary to remove her to the hospital, since which time he has trod the way of life in loneliness.
He has for many years engaged in the draying business at Cresco. His health had been failing for some time and on January 21, he laid down the burden of life at the age of 57 years, 4 months and 8 days. He left beside the widow in the hospital, {fold in the page} ette Thursday afternoon and on Friday after a brief service at the Stone school house and laid to rest in Pleasant Hill cemetery where the mortal remains of so many of his friends are interred and within sight of his childhood home.
