John Allen Foster was born in Fife Shire, Scotland, in 1840, and died in Arlington, Iowa, January 14th, 1913, aged 73 years. Coming to the U.S. when 12 years of age he resided in Pennsylvania during his boyhood and early manhood. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. E, 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry, serving four years, lacking two months.
In November, 1865, he was united in marriage with Miss Jessie McNaught, to this union was born ten children, seven of whom are still living: Allen Foster, of Arlington; John Foster, of Elkader; Thomas Foster, of Volga City; Mrs. Belle Finiff, of Independence; Archie and Will Foster, of Webster City; Dr. Jessey Foster, of Lake Preston, S.D. These, with the faithful wife, eleven grandchildren, two sisters and one brother remain to mourn his death.
Brother Foster was an honored member of the M.E. church, having served on the official board, always ready to do whatever came to him for the furtherance of the kingdom of his Lord and Master. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Thursday, January 16th, conducted by the pastor, W. W. Soule. The children were all in attendance at the funeral except Thomas, who is in the Finley hospital at Dubuque.
The other relatives from out of town in attendance were: John and Alexander Foster and Alexander Stevenson, from Arcadin, Wis., nephew of the deceased: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ewing, of Cedar Rapids; Mary Hoskin, of Jesup; and Jeanette Miller, of Hazelton. The entire community mourn Mr. Foster's death and extend sympathy to the bereaved ones. - Arlington News.

Death certificate gives his parents as John Allen Foster and Betty Hoag, both born in Scotland. Also, burial place as Taylorsville, Iowa.
