Edwin C. Gordon

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Schutte Funeral Home for Edwin C. Gordon, who passed away at Postville Hospital following a lingering illness on February 19. The Rev. Walter T. Martin, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church, was in charge of the rites. Burial was in Postville cemetery.

Edwin C. Gordon, son of James Gordon and Nancy Stiles Gordon was born September 3, 1864 in Grand Meadow township, Clayton county, Iowa and passed away at Postville Community Hospital on February 19, 1956.

The family was among the earliest settlers in this community. Eight-eight years of his life were spent on the Henderson Prairie farm which his father purchased in 1852, and which Ed still owns. His declining years were spent at Postville Hospital where he was tenderly cared for.

He wad devoted to general farming in earlier years when machinery was horse drawn and hand operated, but with the advent of power machinery his farm interests turned to cattle raising. Of him it can be truly said, "He loved the soil." He was never active in community life, but in his quiet way he won the respect of all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur who passed away in 1896 and Orren who was his steadfast companion until his death in 1940, and one sister Arzette who died in infancy in 1868.
