SERVICES HELD FOR LOCAL WOMAN'S FATHER

Funeral mass for Verl S. Murphy was held Saturday. Aug. 1. 1987. at 10 30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sumner The mass was celebrated by Rev. Paul Evans. Pallbearers were Lane Becker. Dan Becker, Jim Becker John Becker. Scott Siechert, Lori Richardson. Valeri Siechert, Kara Siechert. Honorary pallbearers were A F. Miller, Rueben Koester, Emil Borcherding, Clair Hammeter, Hollis Hunt, Otto Westendorf and Bernard Nolte, Becker-Milnes Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements and interment was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Sumner.

Verl Scott Murphy, son of David and Viola Scott Murphy, was born November 12, 1902. at Marshalltown. He received his education in the Nichols and Muscatine schools.

On May 16. 1933, he was united in marriage with Bernice Meighan at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner. Veryl worked as a rural mail carrier for more than forty years in Waverly and Sumner Prior to and following retirement from the postal service. Veryl also was employed by the Sumner School District as a bus driver.

Following a sudden illness. Mr Murphy's death occurred Thursday morning. July 30, 1987 at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner. He was 84 years old and a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He served on the Sumner City Council, as well as a member of the original Board of Directors of Community Memorial Hospital. He was a longtime member of Meadowbrook Country Club.

In addition to his wife Bernice of Sumner, he is survived by one son, Wayne, of Lancaster, PA; two daughters: Mrs. Jean Kruger of West Union and Eileen, Mrs. David Siechert of Cedar Rapids, ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Nellie Davis.
