Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. for Martin Jasper Frey, 64, who died Friday, Oct. 6, at home. Rev. Victor Baderschneider, assisted by Intern Peter Beckstrand and Rev.Ernest Guyer, conducted the services at Zion Lutheran church, West Union. Rev. Harley Frey conducted the family service Oct 9, at 8 p.m.
Pallbearers were Martin's nephews, Don Bartz and James Frey; his business associates, Kevin Anderson and Brent Johnson, and Martin's community friends, Larry Daniels and Dave Zimmer. Honorary pallbearers were business associates, Jack Cline, Thomas Krueger and Kenneth Madison. Arrangements were handled by Burnham Wood Funeral Home, West Union. Burial was in the West Union cemetery.
Special music was presented by the grandchildren. Dawn Guyer and Laura McCollough sang "Touch of the Master's Hand" at the family service Oct 9. At the service conducted Oct. 10, Dawn Guyer, Todd, Laura and Timothy McCollough, Theaand Mandy Mann, and Evie and Amy Holstein sang "Jesus Loves Me" with "Oh, How He Loves You and Me". Dawn Guyer and Laura McCollough sang "My Tribute" during the funeral service. Also at the Oct 10 service, Todd McCollough played "The Taps" at the cemetery and accompanied by the congregation on his trumpet as they sang "How Great Thou Art" and "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less".
Martin Jasper Frey, son of Robert M. and Ethel A. (Moore) Frey, was born March 3, 1925, at the Robert Frey farm near Wadena. He was trained in the Christian
faith as a young child in the United Brethren Church at Wadena. Martin was baptized and confirmed Nov. 30, 1947, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Keystone. He attended Wadena Elementary School and graduated from the West Union High School in 1943. He graduated with a degree in cosmetology from Paris Cosmetology Academy, Cedar Rapids. In the mid-60's he attended and graduated from Reisch American School of Auctioneering, Mason City. He served in the United States Army Air Force from 1943-1946.Martin was united in marriage to Lavanna Jean Knipp, a Paris Cosmetology Academy classmate, Feb. 28, 1947, by Rev. A.W. Brauer at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids. They became the parents of six children, Roxanne, Monica, Jolayn, Jacqueline, Michelle, and Martin. In the 50's Martin and Lavanna owned and operated Frey's Beauty Salon and farmed in Keystone. Martin managed the Humphrey Dairy, West Union, for his brother, Kenneth, for eight years in the 60's. In the late 60's he was employed by Traeger's Jack and Jill as a meat cutter.
Since the early 80's Martin and Lavanna had owned and operated Frey's Amusements, New Orleans, La. Their carnival played at fairs and celebrations in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Louisiana.
Martin was a member of St. John's Lutheran church, Keystone, and Zion Lutheran church, West Union.
He was an active member of the American Legion Post #107, Keystone, serving as Commander in 1949. He was a member of the Midwest Showmans Association.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Roxanne Kaye; his parents, Robert and Ethel Frey, and one brother, Russell.
Survivors include his wife, Lavanna; four daughters, Monica Guyer, West Union; Jolayn McCollough, Aledo, ILL.; Jacqueline Mann, West Union; Michelle Holstein, Norfolk, Neb.; and one son, Martin Jasper II, Gretna, La.; 12 grandchildren, Dawn Guyer, Todd, Laura and Timothy McCollough, Thea, Mandy and Misty Mann, Evie, Amy arid Mary Holstein, and Martin Jasper Joshua III and Sarah Frey; three brothers, A. Kenneth, West Union; Glen, Charles City, and Harley, Platte, S.D.; one sister, Mrs. William (Gertrude) Witt, Elkader, nieces and nephews.
