Page 2, column fourHiram. B. Hoyt Dead.
After an illness of three weeks Hiram B. Hoyt passed to the great beyond at about 8 o'clock Wednesday evening, Jan. 3, 1906, from Bright's disease.
Mr. Hoyt had been an important factor in West Union almost from the beginning of the town, coming here in 1853. He first settled on the farm in Illyria which afterward became noted as the Gilson place, subsequently moving to the farm in Dover now owned by John Crowe. In 1868 he moved into town, and in partnership with the late Sam'l Holton entered the hardware trade in which he has been connected, directly or indirectly ever since. In 1873 he was instrumental in the organization of the Fayette County National Bank, being its Vice President from the beginning, and when, two years later, the Fayette County Savings Bank was formed he was chosen its President, and held that place to the day of his death. This alone would be enough to indicate his standing in the community as a ma n of integrity and ability. Mr. Hoyt had his peculiarities and notions, among them a loyalty to his friends; an admiration for sincerity and faithfulness; an independence of character; a firm adherence to
what he thought was right; detesting ostentation and pretense, despising the moral and pecuniary profligate. Ever faithful, loving and kind to his relatives and family, public spirited, true and generous to the community, he goes to his last sleep mourned as few are mourned.Hiram B. Hoyt was born in Fairfield county, Conn., Dec. 17, 1830. In early manhood he started out for himself locating at South Hero, Vt., where, on the 22nd of Feb., 1858, he was married to Miss Juliet Kent, who died in this city in 1873, leaving three children—Ella S. wife of Ed. P. Sears of Salt Lake City; Florence, wife of Joseph Andrews of Alliance, Neb.; and Fred E., who has succeeded his father in the hardware store.
Nov. 22, 1870, Mr. Hoyt was married to Miss Hattie A. Booth of Milwaukee, who survives him with two daughters, Mrs. E.S. Lawyer and Mrs. F.W. Schneider of this city.
Mr. Hoyt is also survived by three sisters: Mrs. Grace Wright and Mrs. Wm. Kent of this city, and Mrs. Sidney White of Volga City.
The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian church this afternoon, Rev. W.P. Ruston of Dubuque officiating, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. Frank A. Gageby.
