M.H. BATES DIES.

Marvin Henry Bates was born in Delaware county, N.Y., Sept.5, 1824, and died at his home in this city on Aug. 3, 1905. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Hill, were held at the house on Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

His father died when he was twelve years of age, and the family then moved to Lake county, Ohio, where he was adopted by Rev. Hartwell, a Baptist minister with whom he lived until he was twenty-one years of age. Feb. 28, 1849, he was united to Keziah D. Fox, with whom he lived until her death on Aug. 1, 1864. Six children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. Of the remaining children Herbert D. Bates lives in Joplin, Mo.; Walter S. Bates, at Bradford, Pa.; and Mrs. Hattie K. Martin, at Lima, this county. On Dec.4, 1864, he was again united in marriage to Elizabeth Smith. One child, Henry A. Bates, of Dubuque, was the result of this union.

Deceased came to Iowa in 1861 and located on a farm near Nashua. In 1867 he moved to Fayette county, settling near West Union. In 1871 he went to Elk county, Kansas, and in 1881 returned to Fayette county where he lived until the time of his death.

At the age of nineteen he was converted and baptized in the Baptist church. About fifty years ago under the teachings of Isaac Sanborn he embraced in the Seventh Day Adventists faith. He remained a faithful member of that church until his death at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 29 days.

At one time Mr. Bates was quite well to-do but he met with business reverses and about twenty years ago lost all his property. He was known as a good citizen, a faithful, tender husband, and a stanch believer in the faith of Jesus Christ.
