M.H. BATES.

Marvin Henry Bates, mention of whose death was made in this paper last week, was buried Sunday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. Hill.

Mr. Bates was born in Delaware county, N.Y., Sept. 5, 1824. His father died when he was twelve years of age, and the family then moved to Lake county, Ohio, where he was adopted by Rev. Hartwell, a Baptist minister with whom he lived until he was twenty-one years of age. Feb. 28, 1849, he was united to Keziah D. Fox, with whom he lived until her death on Aug. 1, 1864. Six children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. Of the remaining children Herbert D. Bates lives at Joplin, Mo.; Walter S. Bates, at Bradford, Pa.; and Mrs. Hattie K. Martin, at Lima, this county. On Dec. 4, 1864, he was again united in marriage to Elizabeth Smith. One child, Henry A. Bates, of Dubuque, was the result of this union.

Deceased came to Iowa in 1861 and located on a farm near Nashua. In 1867 he moved to Fayette county, settling near West Union. In 1871 he went to Elk county, Kansas, and in 1881 returned to Fayette county where he lived until the time of his death.

He was a good citizen and a good man. Although for twenty years he had been in straitened circumstances owing to business reverses, he did the best he could, and there are many who will remember him kindly.
