WECK, WACK

In Clermont, on July 30th, 1871, Juliette Wack, daughter of C.F. and Sarah Wack*, aged 10 years, 9 months and 25 days.

The above sad announcement appears in the People’s paper, and accompanying it is a long obituary notice of the deceased, followed by a set of resolutions adopted by the Union Sabbath School, in memory of its universally loved and esteemed member, Juliette.

Sad, indeed, must now be the parents of the amiable girl – the pride and ornament of their home has departed. The following is the closing paragraph of the obituary notice referred to:

‘Tis difficult to feel that she is dead. Her presence, like the shadow of a wing, that is just lessening in the upper sky, lingers upon us. We can hear her voice, and for her step we listed and the eye looks for her coming with a strange, forgetful ________. We cannot feel that she will not come – that from her cheek the delicate flush has faded, and the light dead in hear soft dark eye, and on her lip that was an exquisitely pure, the dew of the damp grave has fallen. Who so loved is left, among the living? Who hath walked the world with such a winning loveliness, and on its bright, brief journey, gathered up such treasurers of affection. She was loved by all. The joy of her familiar sphere, in the light, and music of her way, a beautiful companion. Who could feel while looking on beauty such as her’s, that it would ever parish? It is like the melting of a star into the sky while you are gazing on it, or a dream in its most ravishing sweetness, rudely broken.

Note: Juliette, her parents, C.F. & Sarah Weck are buried in God’s Acres cemetery, Clermont. Her gravestone is inscribed with dates: 10/05/1860-07/31/1871
