Ernest ”Ernie” Helgerson, 73, of Clermont, Iowa died Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at the Northgate Care Center in Waukon, Iowa.
Ernest Henry was born on September 27, 1941 in Fayette County, Iowa to Henry and Ruth (Suckow) Helgerson. He attended Postville School through his junior year. Ernie was united in marriage with Jane Schott on March 4, 1961 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa. To this union two children were born, Sheila and Sharnel.
Ernie worked for many years at Hygrade in Postville and in 1979 he became employed with the Valley Co-Op, where he worked until his retirement. He was a member of the Clermont Fire Department for 22 years and belonged to the West Clermont Lutheran Church. Ernie enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He loved his grandchildren and was truly a nice guy.
Ernie is survived by his daughters, Sheila (Dave Imoehl) Kohls of Elgin, Iowa and Sharnel (Rob Schreur) Helgerson of Clermont, Iowa; grandchildren, Samantha Kohls of McGregor, Iowa, Spencer Kohls of Elgin, Iowa and Austin Kohls of Elgin, Iowa; brothers, Richard (Sandie) Helgerson of Postville, Iowa, Daryl (Mary) Helgerson of Castalia, Iowa, Ronnie Helgerson of Postville, Iowa; and sister,Nancy Hill of Huntingtown, Maryland.
Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; parents, Henry and Ruth Helgerson; and a brother-in-law, Joe Hill.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 31, 2015 from 3-7 pm at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Clermont, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Monday.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 1, 2015 at 10:30 am at West Clermont Lutheran Church in Clermont, Iowa with Greg Kleppe as the Officiant.
Burial will follow at God’s Acres in Clermont, Iowa.
