Carlin, Daniel - Mexican war vet, died 1887

December 7 - Daniel Carlin died last Sunday morning. The funeral was at the Baptist church conducted by the pastor.

Capt. Alexander, the pension attorney was in the city this morning. He told of the widow of Dan Carlin of Oelwein applying yesterday for the pension of her husband who was a veteran in the Mexican war. Carlin was the third Mexican veteran that Capt. Alexander had secured pensions for but had died before the matter got through the red-tape process at Washington. Mr. Carlin had no relatives and the matter was at the time of the Captain's receipt of the pension for the deceased mentioned in the paper. Mrs. Carlin who had not lived with her husband for twenty-five years, but who had never been divorced, seeing the item came down from Center Point and applied for the pension.

Note: Daniel Carlin, age 24, enrolled at Garnavillo, Clayton co. IA, in Captain John Parker's Company of Iowa Dragoons Volunteers. He received Military Bounty Land Warrant #62777 for his service.
