Fayette, Ia., Jan. 27 - Funeral services for Joseph J. Earle, Fayette county Civil war veteran, who died at the home of his son, Warren, in Kansas City, Mo., Monday, will be held at the American Legion hall here Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Mr. Earle was 92 years old. He had been visiting in Corpus Christi, Texas, and was on his way to Fayette when taken ill. He had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. M.W. Pattison, on a farm near here for some years.

Mr. Earle was the first white child born in Freeport, Ill. He came to Fayette county with his parents in 1855, attending Upper Iowa university and enlisting in the Union army at the college chapel. He was a student at the college in the earliest days of its existence. He served throughout the war with his regiment, the 3rd Iowa infantry, participating in some of the major engagements of the war, and was wounded in the battle of Shiloh. Prominent in G.A.R. work, he was a past commander of the county organization.

One of Mr. Earle's proudest recollections was the fact that he had heard the most famous of the Lincoln-Douglas debates at Freeport. Two years ago he attended an anniversary celebration of the debate in that city. He was a contractor and builder for many years in Iowa and some of the other states. Skillful in wood-working, he made a number of gavels from native woods and presented them to various Fayette county organizations.

Surviving are three children, Mrs. M.W. Pattison, Fayette; Mrs. Clifford Grimes, Colesburg; Warren Earle, Kansas City, Mo. There are three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Mr. Earle was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Oelwein lodge will assist the local American Legion post in the military funeral services. The services will be conducted by Dr. Daniel M. Parker, honorary chaplain of the Fayette county G.A.R. Burial will be in the Fayette cemetery.
