IDA BARNESS

Funeral services for Ida Barness, 79, were held Monday, Feb 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural West Union, with Rev. Richard Vettrus officiating. Burial was in Bethany Lutheran Cemetery. Burnham-Wood Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ida died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 at Palmer Lutheran Health Center following a long illness.

Ida Barness was born near Ossian on July 2, 1920 to Laurie and Josephine (Walvatne) Osterhus. She attended Dover #7 county school.

Ida married Ralph Barness on March 9, 143. To this union five children were born: Bev, Wayne, Jim, Jerry and Nancy. They farmed near Ossian until 1984 when they moved to West Union.

Ida was the church organist. She had served as Sunday school superintendent, and was active in Mission Society. She had been a nurses aide at the Good Samaritan Home and was assistant to the activity director.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Richard and Clifford Osterhus and one sister Clarice Hilgerson.

Ida is survived by her husband, Ralph, West Union; three sons, Wayne, West Union, James and Gerald, both of Ossian; two daughters, Bev Jackson, Waukesha, Wis., and Nancy Bowdish, Strawberry Point. Other survivors are: a sister Louella Solheim, Castalia, 19 grand children and 10 great-grandchildren.
