Page 1, column twoJOHN BAECHLER DIED.
John Baechler an aged, respected citizen of this township passed away at the home of his son, Ernest, a short distance west of this city, Friday morning June 24, 1904, at 1:30 o’clock. Deceased was born in Switzerland in the year 1833 and immigrated to this country in 1876, and to Fayette county where he has resided since. He was engaged in the occupation of farming for a number of years after his arrival in this country, but subsequently moved to this city and resided here for some time. His son wishing to engage in farming, Mr. and Mrs. Baechler sold their town holdings and moved to the farm where she died two years ago. Since that time he has made his home with his son.
Mr. Baechler was a hard working, honest, industrious man, a good neighbor and a kind advisor and will be missed in the community in which he lived. During his last illness he was carefully and skillfully attended but the ravages of the dread disease, pneumonia, could not be overcome and his demise occurred on the above date. He leaves to mourn their loss two daughters and a son, the Mesdames Carl Bauman and G. Freiburghaus, both of whom reside in South Dakota, and Earnest Baechler, of near this city, and two step children, Jacob and Lena Garver besides many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held in the German Baptist church in this city Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Stoeckman, where a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends gathered to pay their last sad respects to their departed and respected loved one. Interment was made in the Elgin cemetery.
