Mary E. Bakeman, daughter of William and Harriet Ketchum, was born at Clermont, , July 8, 1860, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alma Bauder, West Union, Oct. 30, 1943, in her eighty-fourth year. Her parents were pioneers in northeast Iowa, her father losing his life in the Civil War.
She was married to Nicholas H. Bakeman July 4, 1883. They farmed until 1894, when they moved to Elgin where they made their home, with the exception of a few years spent in South Dakota.
To them were born five children, all living. Leroy C. Bakeman of Antoch, Calif., Frank W. Bakeman of Hawarden, Mrs. Alma Bauder of West Union, Delbert A. Bakeman of Belmont, Calif., and Mrs. Harriet Stratton of Huron, S.D.
She also leaves to mourn her loss six grandchildren, two of whom are un the U.S. service, and two great grandchildren.
She was received into the Methodist church in Elgin in 1916 by the Rev. Harlow Graham, and has continued her membership up to her death. For years she worked in the Ladies Aid.
Funeral Services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. C. Warton at the church at two p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, and burial was made in the Elgin cemetery. The casket bearers were Ray DeSart, Sheldon Boyle, Carl Hackman, George Falb, Mel Kohler and Adolph Lehman. A. quartette sang the hymn, “Have Thine Own Way Lord.”
